Simply stated, if you were to take a cup of light roast beans and a cup of dark roast beans, and count up the beans, you'd find a greater amount of light roast beans in the same measurement.


So, the simple answer is that while caffeine content doesn't change, the size and weight of the bean does. Since dark roasted beans are larger and less dense, combined with most people using a scoop to measure their coffee each day, this means fewer dark beans will be in a scoop in comparison to a light roast scoop. So when measuring, light roasts will often will have “more” caffeine, because there are more beans in the scoop!


This is why you might see coffee shops weighing a shot of ground beans for espresso, and well as for pour overs. For those who like to get the perfect cup of coffee, if you weigh out your coffee instead of using a scoop, you will find nearly no difference in caffeine levels between roast levels.
