Cupping Notes: Chocolate, raisin, vanilla, molasses
More caffeine, less flavor. The flavors of the Robusta species are not as refined as those of its cousin coffee, Arabica. However, we have found that some consumers prefer the slightly more intense and bitter profile of Robusta. Also, Robusta beans contain significantly more caffeine than Arabica. For these reasons, we like to keep one Robusta on our Arabica-dominated list of offerings.
Sugar Creek Coffee Roasters carefully sourced this robusta coffee from Buf Cafe. The famed Buf Cafe washing station is in the mountains near the village of Karaba, in the Ginkongoro prefecture in south-central Rwanda. Buf Cafe started operation in 2000, after funding aid from the Rwandan Development Bank and USAID’s PEARL project. Buf Cafe is a private washing station, owned wholly by the Muhirwa family, processing coffee cherry from two distinct cooperatives in the Ginkongoro prefecture: Cobabakagi (1300 members) and Terimbere Kawa Yacu (between 400-600 members). They also collect cherry from farmers in other regions, siphoning away outside cooperative output by placing collection sites within the operating zones of other established groups.
At Sugar Creek Coffee Roasters, we specialize in hand crafted, small batch, artisanal roasted coffee. While other roasters typically pre-roast and have beans on the shelf, we don't roast until you place your order, so you can be assured the freshest roasted coffee is delivered to your door. Each coffee order is roasted to the optimal flavor of the coffee bean you order.
